I was one of those people who joked about his disappearance.

Don't feel like a scumbag for this. A lot of people thought he was just messing around, a lot of people were spreading false info (lots unknowingly) and people just wanted hope that he would be safe.

People cope in different ways, and it seems to me that you were worried but wanted to find a reason not to worry, and just clung on to whatever seemed right. There is nothing wrong with that in my eyes. Humor is a way many people cope with tragedy.

No one wants to believe that someone they love to watch and someone they admire is in a dark place and may end their life, so they may cling on to any hope that they're wrong and they aren't in a bad place.

To me it just seemed like you were in denial, and did exactly that.

I hope I worded this well, but do not feel bad. I hope you feel better about yourself soon.
