Painting Miniatures With Oils

  • Yes, in general oil paints are thicker and need to be thinned.
  • Yes, oil mediums may increase (clove oil) or decrease (liquin, galkyd) the drying time and finish (leveling up or not brush strokes). If you thin the oil paint with just mineral spirits / gamsol to the same consistency of miniature acrylics, you will almost certainly have some problems. You may end up thinning also the binder oil, to the point where when the paint is dry, the pigment will come out of the model when handling it. I recommend using galkyd, it speeds up drying and has no fumes.
  • The finish of oil paints depends generally on the pigment and medium used. Galkyd makes it always glossy. The solution I found is to varnish with a matte clear Rust-Oleum rattle can after all the painting and washes are done and dry (a few days to a week).
