I'm not really qualified to give advice since, like I said, I'm not a good player (never won, got to 950' once and past 800' maybe 5 or 6 times in total), but still, hear's a random dump of advice as it crosses my brain:

first of all, if you struggle to get past the early game (3-400'), the things that helped me the most were:
1. Realizing the importance of armour which is the absolute lifesaver in fights. It's worth it, especially when you're getting used to the game, to learn armoursmithing when you find a forge if you haven't had much luck with finding armour. On a Noldor Feanor it costs 600 XP I ** belive ** and it's a better investment than probably anything you can get at that point: going from, say, 2-5 protection to 4-12 will make you feel like a god.
Armour is especially important against archers because evasion is halved against ranged attacks. Thus even if your character is a stealthy evasive guy in light armour it's a great idea to carry around the heaviest armour and shield you found and switch when you're forced to fight archers (switching takes a single turn). Note that the halved evasion part counts for enemies too so it's always useful to carry around a bow and arrow or throwing axes/spears. Even with no points in archery you can still take potshots at them or finish them when they run away.
Lack of armour might be why you die to spiders (sword spiders?), which I don't really find very threatening otherwise, assuming the character has reasonable melee skill. A nice trick with spiders is breaking line of sight to make then stop chasing you. 2. Avoid orcs! They take a long time to kill, constantly try to surround and flank you (which causes massive evasion penalties), call reinforcements, and are generally a pain in the ass.
The key to avoiding them is scouting the environment Stealth helps a lot, but even without the skill you can move around hiding and stick to the walls and at least some enemies will not notice you. Scout around while avoiding anything that you can't kill quickly, take note of where everything is, especially orcs, and whether the orcs are sleeping or patrolling. Patrolling groups might eventually end up taking the stairs out, but also other groups will appear from the stairs, so avoid lingering there.
A scummy but immensely useful trick is knowing that once you've seen a door, you'll always know its current status in real time even if you don't see it. This way, by closing doors behind you, you'll be able to track the movements of any enemy that can open doors (humanoids and also other stuff later on). Once you know where everything is you can make a plan to clear the level or at least get to the stuff you want, isolating enemies and taking them out quickly and avoiding any orcish clusterfucks.
It's very important to understand how the various enemies' AIs behave, e.g. movement patterns, how they are affected by morale, specific tricks like the one with spiders, etc. This is especially important for orcs (and other humanoids), since they are the trickiest and much more so the more there are around. For example, a group of orcs that's chasing you will not initially let themselves be engaged 1v1 in a corridor: they'll keep their distance and follow you until you run into a dead end or other enemies etc, but if you fight them at the mouth of the corridor (probably 1v2 or 1v3, which puts you at a massive disadvantage), they will eventually follow and fight you in the corridor. This however wastes a lot of time and puts you at risk of being flanked by another group, which eventually will happen, so the moral of the story is avoid orcs, and kill them quickly when you can't.
As for archers, they can be "manipulated" with proper movement to pin them to a wall where they can be killed with basically no resistance (still their buddies will keep shooting you if the terrain allows, so again, make it quick). Basically, they stop running once they're against a wall and you're in front of them perpendicular to the wall. Since in every other case they try to keep their distance from you, it's pretty easy to manouver them in that position.

As for stealth-specific stuff, I'm honestly not sure. My builds are always pretty tentative :P I ** belive ** the canonical good advice is to start with some melee and evasion (5 or 6 to start, I'd say) before you start buying abilities.
Personally I find that taking a few points of stealth as soon as you can afford them is very useful, then if you want to get into big stab criticals (I've seen up to 9x I think) you eventually get disguise (to avoid waking up nearby enemies when you stab one - you'll get to the point where you can enter a room full of monsters and murder most of them before anynoe notices), assassination (obviously), finesse and subtlety. Don't get all this stuff right away; make sure you have always enough melee and evasion (and/or good enough armour and weapon) to take be able to take a fight in unfavourable conditions.
I almost always try to take sprinting as soon as possible. It's probably a bit of a crutch, but a really good one. It's hard to imagine a character that wouldn't want it. It's the simplest and most universal form of escape, and also combos will all sorts of stuff, e.g. kiting with archery, using charge even against enemies that are running from you, moving around at normal speed in stealth mode, reliably disengaging from anything that isn't fast and having them stop chasing you with vanish, or just running faster to the stairs (stairs = safety).

Well, I'm stopping now since this is already a massive fucking wall of text, the tl;dr of which is: I don't know what I'm doing, head over to the official forums (http://angband.oook.cz/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=12, probably not super active, though) for real advice.
