Returning items bought with points

I recently did a haul redeeming the same amount of points.

One of the things I got was defective and I simply wanted to exchange it for a new one. The employees at ulta wouldn’t let me exchange it that day at the same price point because they said with the exchange I’d get the points I’d spent on it back in my account in 24 hours. (which was around $64 in points). That made sense. So I had to wait 24 hours for the points to show in my account.

The problem is the $64 in points didn’t show up... only the points for the amount I actually SPENT on the item came back. The item was $96 so the $32 I had spent came back to me in points. I had to email Ultas customer service and explain the situation and they gave me more points but still not the right amount. It was like $6 less. At that point I just rebought the product and took the $6 loss. And this was just me wanting the same item because the first one literally didn’t work right.
