Boy, if you guys ever traveled to you would be shocked to realize how common it is to see this symbol used in all sorts of contexts: many religions use it (Buddhist, Hindu, Jaines...etc), but it also appears in many cultures, including in northern Europe (you will see it along side other symbols in the Finnish military, for example). The Nazis took this symbol and used (perverted) it for their own ends, but many people wear it (reclaim it) as it actually symbolizes peace, personal virtue as well as having many celestial connections.

In this picture you can see that one diagonal is longer than the other. I can't recall where I seen this before but it is similar to an African symbol that represents loyalty and readiness to serve. Not all symbols of this type represent hate and you can see it all over Europe (on buildings, art works...) from times that predate the German Nazis.
