Seeking advice from the veterans.

Software... there’s a lot that you’ll want at some point. It can add up very quickly, so I’m going to pump the brakes on listing out a long list of helpful tools. My two cents:

-Tax - Drake, Intuit ProConnect, Lacerte (pros and cons to each of course). ProConnect probably has the most functionality and features available, but Drake gets plenty of love for good reason. Both of these have their shortcomings, and neither can handle particularly complex returns well. That’s where Lacerte comes in. -Engagement letters and payment - Practice Ignition

As far as pricing is concerned, basic tax prep is probably in the ball park. There’s plenty of nationwide averages available to find through a quick Google search, but it always seems pretty low to me. This is where scope and clarity in your engagement letter is critical. If all you are doing is preparing and filing the return, then that’s probably fair. In my experience, most clients expect more than that as part of the a basic tax prep fee - handling IRS correspondence, tax planning and estimated payments, proactive personalized suggestions to reduce their tax bills, etc.
