DBZ is saga based and the formula is 1) Someone bad comes along. 2) They have to train in some fashion to be strong enough. 3) They fight for a while. 4) It's hopeless. They didn't train enough. 5) Something exceptional happens and they are strong enough. 6) They win. 7) Some plot points push to next saga.

Reasons you might enjoy watching: The ways they train and the results, the growing interactions between Goku (main character) and the people in his circle, the suspense of what might happen (Dragon balls grant wishes so people can die to be wished back later). The fighting scenes of course.

Give the first saga a try and see if you like it.
