Based on the pre-invasion messaging (including from officials and other state-affiliated personalities), and the Chinese reactions to the invasion, I feel safe to say that most of their public did not expect or support an invasion.

Xi? Maybe he knew. Even if so, he may have had to read his own room. Chinese and Russian authoritarianism are not the same (in some ways polar opposites) and the CCP cares about at least looking responsive to opinion among the eastern Han majority (just look at what happened with Zero-Covid). China shares a common rival with Russia, but the Russians are not friends, nor the Ukrainians enemies, nor LDNR legitimate republics.
