Test Post

Author's Notes
Hi! This is my map for my worldbuilding project I call "Crescent Addendum". A post-apocalyptic space western set in the year 2113.

I know the map's flooded, deserted, and snowed spots may not be accurate to actual geography, but I think this way I can explore different areas with a bit more freedom without having to rack my brain over the different biomes and stuff that would realistically change if this were to happen.

I got this idea after watching Kurzgesagt's video, so if you want a more detailed explanation you can check it out. I'm currently working on some different things, so I won't be working on this for a bit, but if you'd like, you can follow me on Twitter and Instagram (@TachyTack) for future projects :)

Oh and there is a glossary at the very bottom of this comment for concepts that might be a little confusing, I mark them with a number atop the word like in this example example, a few of these concepts I just explain in the POI section. If I don't list one please let me know.

Map Information
After countless experiments and tests trying to push the limits of shared alien technology, the moon gave in and its orbit slowed down, steadily getting closer and closer to Earth, causing massive waves, eruptions and earthquakes, until eventually breaking apart into smaller rocks and becoming the Earth's rings.

Due to the volcanic winter that came from it, the northernmost regions of Earth and the American east coast are covered in snow, freezing the water around it, including the Bering Strait1, allowing you to cross from Alaska to Russia on foot. Not that you'd want to, since most of the northern snowed region is a chilling dead zone.

The water surrounding Australia and New Zealand moved to other areas of the world, revealing large bits of dry land.

POI Information

City
These are the only cities that humans managed to build after the apocalypse, and about of 53% of the remaining population are spread out around them.

- New Haven: The biggest city on Earth is home to one Übercruiser2, the perfect reason to come if you want out of this forsaken planet. It takes 3 months to make a round trip, and would unfortunately take 330 years to evacuate everyone on NH3 alone; for this reason, every time a new trip is scheduled, chaos ensues. You need to be smart, fast, and be willing to do whatever it takes when the time comes, if not, you might be left til last, have your spot replaced, or worse, you might be killed.

- Vistaverde: The 2nd biggest city (still far smaller than NH), Vistaverde is a Brazilian city set right on the equator, where you can see the Earth's rings as a straight line top to bottom. It is also the city closest to a moon forest, making it the stormiest city in the world. If you want to come here, you'd better be ready to patch up any holes in your homeroom4, and board up any remaining windows.

- Blossomtown: Named after its huge and beautiful flower beds, Blossomtown is the city closest to metro-city ruins, a port, and a moonforest not too far northeast, making it the city with the widest types of resources available.

- Svalebyen: "The City of the Swallow" is a highly religious community, and the smallest city by far. They are not very welcoming to the rare outsider that comes, and those who leave the city are considered deserters, literally branding you with a mark; and if you're caught by any scouts on expedition, you'll be captured and made a slave as punishment for the work and efforts you have left to others in your place; not that you'd want to desert anyway; set in the middle of the Canadian-Alaskan dead zone, the people of Svalebyen constantly have to endure near-unsurvivable cold temperatures. Venturing out for greener pastures (literally), will likely result in a cold, lonely death.

Mega Crater

Mega Craters are craters spanning anywhere between 70-110km in diameter, made by huge meteorites that broke apart from the moon after reaching the Roche limit5. A single crater has far more lunar material than all moon forests combined, but it is very hard to extract. Only a couple of these house several villages inside.

Overgrown Moon Forest

A moon forest is simply a forest incrusted with moonrock monoliths6, and are much more prone to moonstorms7. These monoliths house lunar material that is much easier to extract compared to a mega crater, and are the main spots for resources that are used in lunar equipment and weaponry.

An overgrown moon forest is far larger than the average moon forest, with bigger and more abundant monoliths. Due to unknown effects of these bigger monoliths, gravity is slightly lower in these areas than anywhere else on Earth, and plants around them grow in a more "alien" fashion, with more of a tentacle shape rather than a stick shape, and are stronger and more durable than regular Earth vegetation; these plants have no medicinal effects or material use, however.

Port

A standard seaport to transport people across the sea.

Metro-City Ruins

The remains of the pre-moonfall metro-cities, the biggest and wealthiest cities on Earth, where society's most revolutionary discoveries occurred. These cities were bigger than any of the 4 current cities, and each of them had a single space port8 that could fit 3 space cruisers9. These space cruisers transported people and materials to other planets and back.

In the year 2113, most of these metro-cities are flooded, their space ports non-functional, a huge portion of their structures leveled, with only some valuable resources left, and are now nothing but a shadow of the former glory. These cities were based in New York, Buenos Aires, Berlin, Johannesburg, Hong Kong, and Melbourne.

Dead Zone

Dead Zones are highly dangerous zones with extreme temperatures. There is nothing alive in these zones, nor anything of value. The only reason why you might want to traverse through them is for a quick shortcut, but without the right equipment, you will not survive. The biggest singular dead zones are in Alaska, Russia and Australia, but there are smaller, "safer" zones.

Glossary

  1. Bering Strait: a strait between Alaska and Russia, connecting the Bering Sea and the Arctic Ocean.
  2. Übercruiser: a massive evacuation ship that can hold up to 600,000 people. It takes on average 3 months to travel to another planet and back.
  3. NH: abbreviation for "New Haven".
  4. homeroom: a single room that serves as a home. made to compensate for space due to the crammed nature of each city.
  5. Roche limit: the closest distance that an object can approach a planet without being pulled apart by the its gravitational pull.
  6. moonrock Monolith: big, natural monoliths made of lunar rock.
  7. moonstorm: lunar rocks that are pulled from the Earth's rings and rain down upon the surface.
  8. space port: a port made for space cruisers to land and take off.
  9. space cruiser: the standard space ship used in interplanetary travel. It can hold up to 10,000 people, and take around 2 weeks on average to travel between 2 planets.
