What's the saddest thing that happened to an old school friend you don't see anymore?

Drugs

We grew distant because he got a drugatic girlfriend and was hanging with that crowd. Didn't hear from him for two or so years and when I finally did he had dropped the girlfriend and I gave him a job as he wanted to turn his life around. He was working for a restaurant at night and doing construction during the day for me making $15 an hour clearing an extra $300-$500 a week depending how much he wanted to work living at his mom's house with no bills, 28-year-old. We were hanging out, going out to get food, bullshiting like we use to. I buy and sell wheels and tires on craigslist on the side, which is one thing we use to do together a lot and made good cash doing so. During this three or four month timespan he had been finding good deals on wheels and I was putting the money up to get them.

One Saturday came around and I had found a good deal on a two sets a guy was selling an hour away and I was driving by myself to get them and on the same day he had "a buddy" with a set that he needed cash for that day and was well below market value. I gave him the $4500 cash to pick them up and I drove three hours round trip to get the other sets. I got back and thought it was weird he hadn't called me. He then wouldn't answer my calls, hadn't showed up to where he lived at his moms house and stopped showing up to his restaurant job. Spoke to his mom a 10 days later and she had confirmed he still wasn't sober, unbeknownst to me, and had gone on a drug binge and didn't come home even to get clothes for a week.

I finally caught him at a traffic light a month or so later and he was all apologetic and couldn't get off his mind he robbed one of his "best friends" and promised he would start paying me back. He blocked my number and haven't heard from him since. I have to much to loose to go after somebody that has nothing to loose so I just hope one day he cleans up and I beleive if he ever get's right he would pay me back but I'm pretty doubtful that will ever happen.
