Thinking about pursuing a career in Public Relations..honest opinions please?

Glad to help and I don't mind your questions at all! For me, job security hasn't been an issue. I've worked for two non-profit organizations- one that is a well-established national organization, and another that is lesser known but has made a tremendous impact given its size. As long as the other parts of the organization are running smoothly I haven't had to worry if I'll get to keep getting a paycheck. Typically you'll be able to see those things coming a long way off before bad things actually start happening.

Sorry, even my parent's don't know how much I make ;) But I can say that to get the salary increases I had to change positions every couple years, and eventually change organizations because I maxed out growth opportunities. There's a misnomer that non-profit communications means you need to sacrifice salary. I haven't found that to be true.

I would say yes, work/life balance may be a little more achievable in a non-profit org that working for an agency where you're subject to the whims of client demands. I haven't worked for an agency, but we've retained a few over the years and I know no matter what time I send an email I'll get a response quickly.

I initially went in to PR because I hated math and science :) Later in life I've found that I actually enjoy science quite a bit, but it would have been a terrible career choice. I've found that my niche is in communications. I'm good at building and implementing campaigns, and not too shabby of a writer. I get to work on things I care about and that's pretty cool.

Everyone's experience will be a bit different, but for me it's been a great fit. Happy to answer any other questions or feel free to PM me too.
