I thought Tae Kwon Do died

The school does not teach anyone how to kick properly. That's my conclusion. The technique of the students is an accurate reflection of the quality of instruction and instructors.

It took me a long time to figure it out because I remember being genuinely terrible until I got my green belt (white yellow orange green at my old school): I didn't expect my son to be any good, but he could not tell me how to do a roundhouse kick. He did not have any of the words to describe how to do it.

Because their process is so broken, no one says "First, pick your foot up. Then, pivot on the ball of your foot 180 degrees. Then, kick." He's probably never heard how to do it, so he can't tell me how to do it!

You have enough rank to acknowledge that you've been told, literally told, how to do a roundhouse kick hundreds of times because part of teaching a class, just warming up, is demonstrating a roundhouse kick. At my son's school, some lackluster black belt just says "round house kick," wings a bad kick, and says "hanna!"

For bonus points, they don't say kiap. They say "Aye!" instead. It's like oh man
