Wanting to start with Morrissey

Don't listen to conjectureandhearsay, Morrissey only became the 'dour bitch' in his later age, and contributed to the Smiths just as much as Johnny did. I started out listening to the best of, then went through the four albums, finishing up with the compilations(Hatful of Hollow, Louder than Bombs, The World Won't Listen). The Smiths backlog is an absolute must, and every song is a gem. (except Golden Lights)

The Morrissey solo albums are more contentious. Viva Hate has the sound closest to the Smiths, being recorded shortly after Strangeways. This is my personal favourite Moz album. The general consensus is that Your Arsenal and Vauxhall and I are the other two 'great' Moz albums.

As for Moz/Smiths history, I would recommend you do your own reading, as it is quite extensive. Meetings with Morrissey is a good book, and Moz has written his own Autobiography. Other then that, the internet is always helpful. Finally, try not to watch any interviews given by Moz in his later years, he really does cone across as a real twat. In his younger days, I've always felt that his ego was tempered by charm and wary idealism. Anyways, hope this helps!
