What to study for quant trading?

Ok, ngo mh haai hoeng gong yaahn but I've been here for a few years and have hired from fodai and gongU very few times.

We've seen tons of CVs and interviews and I'm gonna be frank. The curriculum is sub par and frankly sucks compared to a top UK degree. Both in quality and in quantity with relevant topics covered etc.

That being said. What makes an excellent hire from a HK uni? My favourites we had were: - a guy who did a long term internship during his UG at MS as quant analyst. > 6 months - a guy who did a buy side quant job at tiny fund with an exceptional mentor during his UG. - a few guys who went back to uni for his PhD and / or did a dual degree with an Ivy in the US.

If I'm not mistaken all of them were top 5% of their class. And while it's not a perfect indicator in general, from our interviews we've found that there's a very strong correlation between ability to do the job well and their GPA in the UG courses. This is mainly because the bar is already so low at those universities that if you can't even get good grades there, how on earth are you gonna tackle the problems we throw at U.

Btw don't join a shitty Hong Kong fund, cause they're plenty around which have zero idea what they're doing. We've wasted tons of our time interviewing people thinking they're hotshots just for them to tell us they did some 100 parameter curve fitting on historical candle patterns.

Quantitative trader positions in Hong Kong are currently mostly available in the crypto space. There are some at citadel and flow in trad fi but less so. In general it's not that big of a job market for the good firms. Look into the different roles and responsibilities to get an idea. Especially sell Vs buy side.

So in conclusion, stop whining that your uni is difficult. It's not. Be the best in your year and hope that it's enough. Get an internship at a top firm (I've seen a few grinders manage) and I might see you in an interview in a few years if HK survives their fifth wave.
