What survivor's stories turned out to be false or exaggerated as the years went on?

I have no source for this, I might even have it wrong in my recollection.

Anyway, there was one lifeboat that was ordered to row around the back of the ship and pick up passengers from one of the gangway doors. Apparently, at the time of the sinking, the officer on this lifeboat stated something along the lines that there was either no-one at the doors or the doors were already becoming submerged, as a result he decided to row away from the ship.

Some years later, this person then stated that there were in fact passengers waiting at the door but he decided against loading anyone due to a worry that the lifeboat might become overloaded. In short, abandoning these people and going against his orders.
