If it's true or not. I think it doesn't matter that much, in you really love engineering.

Do something you really like, for your own sake and for your skills and motivation. Not sure how all this works, but I am not sure if one industry is 100% vs 0%. So I assume it's not and it's probably hard for you in your society in general. In that case please rock the world as a software engineer.

I work as a software engineer and have worked with many people from all over the world. But that might be country dependent but it's hard for me to judge that really. Engineering is full with white males mostly, from what I have seen. But really it's usually really hard for companies to find engineers. So they hire what they can get.
