White trash

It's worth noting that in Australia it is only really in the recent decades that Italian and Greek immigrants are referred to as white. I know alot of Italian people (around 30 and older) who were deliberately only taught English to fit in and assimilate. There are a bunch of awful racial slurs that I don't wish to post here; (many of which have fallen out of today's vocabulary) that were directed at European immigrants. My family grew up in a small town, and have told me about the racism that was directed at both indigenous people and migrants. People deliberately tried to hide their languages and culture, people changed the spelling of their last name (or the name altogether).

European immigrants are definitely more accepted now, but Australia is still a deeply racist country. The white Australia policy has left it's mark on us, and the hostility towards new migrants and indigenous people is still clear as day in this country. Hell, it still plays out in unfair policies that treat people differently based on race.

Then there is the class element. I am someone who has a broad Australian accent, I have been called bogan trash, I have been called a feral bitch before. In high school I really tried to change the way I spoke so that I wouldn't get targeted, but now I have come full circle and I don't try to hide this part of myself anymore. You can tell alot about an Australian person by how they pronounce words like 'dance' or 'grant', whether the A sound is broad sounding or more 'British' sounding.

Anyway sorry for the long post, I just think this history is relevant and quite interesting to consider in this context.
