A wife can work if she wants, BUT she requires the husbands permission. This is a crucial factor that many leave out, if the husband is uncomfortable with it, then she can't work.

I think the biggest problem with our community is assuming there’s one opinion and that one opinion is the right opinion.

I’ve seen scholars and sheikhs in my community with daughters who are married, work and are educated. And I’ve also seen daughters who don’t work as well. This shows you it isn’t really a matter of Fiqh, it’s just a preference that the couple must discuss before marriage. If he has a problem with her working then he’ll need to talk to her about it before marriage. I’ve honestly looked into the issue of women not working and I have yet to find compelling evidence as to why a woman shouldn’t work yet it’s okay for her to go shopping and possibly interact with men there (store clerks).

Also I can’t imagine a guy who prefers a homemaker to marry a career woman only to tell her to drop her job and stay at home. But I digress… I guess my point is, there’s no one right opinion; Islam isn’t a hardcore monolithic religion.
