Will Cambridge’s MPhil in Assyriology course be hard to get into??

Full disclosure, I never completed my degree or worked in the field. Take whatever I say with a grain of salt.

Do you know somebody in assyriology? Do you have exceptional skills that would help you break into the field? Can you learn sign forms like a pictographic savant? Are you willing to spend 10-20 years slaving away as a dig site laborer halfway across the world in Iraq after the last 20 years of death & violence? Are you at least proficient in reading French and German? Let alone, are you able to learn Akkadian, Elamite, Sumerian, Arabic, etc... Or do you come from a rich family? Can you funraise for expeditions? Can you easily cover the costs of educating yourself with virtually no chance of making a significant amount of money?

These are the types of questions you should ask yourself before trying to get a degree in Assyriology. Maybe I'm just jaded, but it's a tough field without many job prospects or opportunities for advancement. Your options for making money are heavily limited to teaching and writing books. I think it's a great hobby, and most of the basic academic tools (CAD, ePSD, Huenergard's Grammar, etc...) are available for free. IMO, if you want to start anywhere, start there first.
