Also, have a look at this -- It's for Hubitat, but originated from the same guy for Smarthings, and is really just the same set of instructions. I'm fairly certain that I did my root and port AFTER the mention of the groundhog day problem, and it worked OK.

The results may not be worth it though -- there is still decent functionality, but you're on a VERY old version of droid. You can run some apps, use the switches, and even some of the sensors. But you have to reboot the thing every day or so -- just reboot, not re-installation; not a HUGE deal -- I actually had to do that when it was running on Wink too.

But long term, probably not worth it. My last Relay is still running, but in a spot that I honestly never use it for anything more than one of the two switches. Eventually, I'll get around to finishing my reno in that room, and replace the switch with a Lutron Caseta.
