Your new DSA leadership!!

Stop, y'all. I'm a member of Texas DSA. I haven't been as active as I'd like to be because of childcare and work, but I've been around enough to know that Danny is very good at his job with ADSA. He might not be right for national leadership, but he is great as Austin co-chair. If it turns out he has intentionally misled the Austin delegation, that's going to be really upsetting for everyone. But there's no statement yet that this is the case, so stop jumping to conclusions.

Let's take a step back and assume good faith in our comrades as we are supposed to, OK? What we know so far is that Danny was a union organizer for decades. That included work with TSEU, CWA and yes CLEAT. As far as anyone knows, only Key Wiki claims he is currently with CLEAT. Everyone else says that his work with CLEAT was in the past, as a part of his work as a professional union organizer.

He has been a socialist and DSA member only a few years- longer than most of us, but recently enough that he had decades of activism and professional work and private life before that. We came from all different paths to get where we are now. It's not uncommon for people to try to work for good within a system before realizing that it's the system itself that must be worked against. So calling him a cop or a mole is a smear. The first is untrue, the second is unsubstantiated. He was an organizer of unions for the working class and state employees, and yes- it turns out that at one point that included police officers.

The more important issue is that the convention voters weren't aware of it. If he'd disclosed it and made it part of his story, then delegates could choose whether or not to accept these aspects of his past professional work in the context of his current work with DSA, which he has been very good at according to all the people who actually have been working with him on the ground.

The fact that it was not disclosed could be something that intentionally hidden, but if you actually know Danny, that seems unlikely. He's sort of a relic in some ways- old fashioned working class organizer- very good at organizing and networking people. Very action oriented. Brave and dedicated- he shows up for everything, encourages younger people, supports work all across Texas, was arrested this summer protesting ICE deportations / SB4. But not such a great speaker or writer, not very theory based, not super politically savvy. My bet is that it was not mentioned because not because it wasn't considered an issue, but because it wasn't considered at all. There's a lot going on right now in Texas- it feels like the last six months has been decades, and this was work he did in the past among decades of other work. That is a stupid mistake, but it's not the same thing as malicious intent. For one thing, it's widely known and easily available info. For another, people keep saying that he said "state employees" as cover for "police" but obviously "state employees" refers to TSEU- the Texas State Employees Union that Danny did work for and where ADSA held its meetings until recently and where Danny does organizer trainings still today.

That said, I agree the leadership needs to reconsider his election in the light of this info (and more importantly, consider a screening process that could prevent this from happening in the future). And even if Danny acted in good faith, I agree also that the harm the scandal might do to the image of the organization might be worse than the benefit of his skills (which, again, hundreds of people in Texas agree are considerable). So I'm not saying that he should remain in NPC, just that it's more likely a fuck up and not this hysterical "omg they elected a cop mole!" bullshit.

If it does turn out that Danny intentionally omitted this info, that's going to be upsetting to the hundreds of people he's helped organized, trained, mentored and struggled with (the fight in Texas is real, y'all, and exhausting), and the last thing anyone needs is a bunch of supposed comrades sneering online. Sit back and trust in your leadership that this will be handled appropriately.
