Aldous Huxley is one of the most famous pioneers of psychedelics, books of his such as moksha, island, and doors of perception are some of his most famous works that describe his experience with psychedelics. Doors of perception was perhaps one of the first books in the western canon to describe the subjective effects of mescaline. Brave New World has a drug named Soma which provides the user with a blissful state of consciousness. Soma in the context of the novel can almost be seen as the concept of blissful ignorance, a phrase from the book that was repeated multiple times is ''a gramme is better than a damn” showing that the citizens would rather use drugs that feel any bit of unhappiness. Soma is described as an extremely dose dependent drug that produces wide ranges of subjective effects, at higher doses soma exhibits hallucinogenic properties. One example of the hallucinogenic effects of soma is when it’s stated that “half a gramme for a half-holiday, a gramme for a weekend, two grammes for a trip to the gorgeous East, three for a dark eternity on the moon.'' This clearly shows the disconnection from reality and time distortion that psychedelic drugs induce in users. The origin of this perfect drug called soma stems from Vedic and Zoroastrian literature where it is described as a drink that was occasionally consumed in ritual or war, in fact soma is mentioned multiple times in the Rigveda which is one of the most sacred and canonically important Hindu texts. Soma is not just a concept or a metaphor, it was a real plant/ concoction/ brew of psychoactive components. Scholars still debate the exact compounds involved in soma with fervor. Some of the purposed substaces in the brew are psilocibe cubensis, amnitaia muscaria, cannabis, opium, honey, and various other herbs. The notion of soma not only being a drug but also a concept/ entity is clear in both the Rigveda and Brave New World, indeed in the 9th mandala of the Rigveda it is mentioned multiple times that the cow was the embodiment of soma, further substantiating the idea that the dung loving psychedelic psylocibe cubensis mushrooms may have played a part in this brew.
