[5E] Should inside checks be able to give some insight on what should the PC do ?

Generally, I'd recommend against letting the Insight check have a greater scope than what is described in the rules. Having a player appeal to the GM for tips on what to do is also a problem, sort of - if you (as the GM) is stonewalling, then the game's stalled; if you present a series of solutions, then the game's not a challenge. It's a difficult balance to strike.

You could present a series of general tips in this situation. Such as:

  • Have the player had their character talk to everyone they can think of

  • Who were talked to and who weren't talked to

  • Did they inspect everything they could inspect

  • Did they look at all the handouts properly

  • Did you as the GM forget to give out any clue?

What is right for your game is up to you and your players to decide. If they - and you - think it is fair to have a sort of 'common sense' roll to get an idea about what to do to solve a problem, then by all means go for it.

The main point with the game is to have fun, after all, and if they're brainfarting badly enough to not have fun any more, then one should try to get the show on the road again, as it were.

Personally, though, I'd likely not allow Insight to be used in the outlined manner, however.
