Why 90% of CrossFit Gyms Are Slowly Going Bankrupt

I coach in Van in this model. Heres why it works for me.

I have 30 or so clients paying anywhere from 165-400 a month. The low end being only group class, the high end being one personal training hour a week in combination with group class. Lets say the average is 225. Which it probably is give or take 10 bucks. That equals 6750 in revenue just from their monthly fees. I make an average of 45% of that revenue. Thats 3037.50 for just having my clients attend the gym. I am responsible for 6 group classes based on our model, some coaches have 4 some have 5 it depends on the number of clients.

If we do the math (6 classes a week x 4.3 weeks in a month = 25.8 classes per month)

3037.5 / 25.8 = 117.73 per group class hour.

I coach a much better class if I know I am making a good wage. Most places I know pay the coach by the hour to coach a class. Lets say I made 40.00 a class and I coached the same amount of classes.

25.8x40= 1032 per month for group class hours.

Thats not a liveable wage in any city in North America.

To point out whats been brought up in this thread too is that no only my clients attend my class. If there are 16 people in a class 3-6 might be mine. Another coach might coach the class the right after me and the numbers would be very similar.

Now again. Whenever I coach a class I look around and see how many of clients there are and make note in my head. If I go a week without seeing Jon Doe in any class I'm going to call, email or text and make sure they are healthy and so on. Thats where to "ownership" of a clients comes in.

Back to earnings for a minute. Lets say I have 3 people in our fundamentals program at a time. Which is done 1 on 1. 15 sessions isn't unheard of prior to group class entry. If each session is 83.50 the math is now this

3 clients x 15 pt's each x 83.5 = 3757.5

if make 45% thats 1690.88.

Add that to my revenue from class hours and my month is now.

1690.88+3037.50=4728.38

I am encouraged to bring clients in and keep clients happy. They are paying for a professional service and I am giving them a professional service.

Same goes with every other coach. Hence why I take care of all the clients in the gym because I know every other coach is taking care of everyones clients in their classes.

We also are able to run a higher level, faster paced class because clients and more comfortable with the movements and scalings because the vast amount of 1 on 1 attention they have received prior to class.

I know this is long, but its why the system works. Its not perfect, but it beats getting paid 40 an hour to coach people I have no relationship with and no investment in.
