am I correct in recognizing a deviation here? (more in comments)

Reading does wonders. Of course, one should practice all aspects of language - speaking, listening, reading, and writing - and learn vocabulary. However, I found that when I began reading, I could understand listening better. I learned many real-life expressions from reading that I wouldn't have learned through listening alone, as many accents can be hard to understand. Once I knew these expressions, I could hear them better too. Reading also helped me tremendously with speaking, as I could use the newly found phrases and words. The same goes for writing. What I am trying to say is that I saw the most progress and many of my friends did too when we started reading. I know that starting with reading can be overwhelming, especially if you're reading books made for native speakers. That's why I joined Learning Through Stories, a startup that creates bilingual books with real-life vocabulary and phrases to help boost all aspects of a new language, all for the price of a cup of coffee.
