AMA Request: A Heroine User

It's spelled "heroin".

Why the fuck would you start doing heroine?

I was working freelance music video production in L.A. There was a lot of black tar heroin in L.A. in the '90s. It was cheap and potent. I had tried everything else, so I figured heroin was next in line. A girl I was seeing asked if I wanted to try it, so I did. The first few weeks are a lot of fun, because you're still getting really high. After that, the high becomes less pronounced, and pretty soon, you can't stop doing it or you have to go through withdrawal (which I did a few times until I stopped for good (so far). I did my last heroin over a decade ago.

I knew a couple or three people who were able to sustain a pretty straight life for a while while using heroin. It's basically about how long the money holds out. I continued working freelance for a while. Actually, I started doing coke with the heroin after a while, and the coke is what really made me stop caring about work. You start doing sketchy stuff when you can't afford your daily fix anymore. You start selling stuff you own until you don't really have anything anymore.

Why didn't you just use marijuana, cocaine, or prescription drugs; all of which make a little sense to most people for the general appeal?

Marijuana has always made me spin and barf and then sit in the corner feeling paranoid for hours. But I enjoy the smell of it and am an advocate for legalization. Cocaine, I used, but never without heroin. I just didn't prefer it as much as I did heroin. I always enjoyed psychedelics, especially LSD.
