well that was a different time.. if you were on the net back then chances are you were a computer "elite" and the people you talked with were also.

I didn't get on the net steady until 2000 but I do remember surfing the old web in the late 90's over at a friends house. He had Duke Nukem 3D.

I've said it many times, I blame the current state on the cellphone/facebook change.. thats when people who didn't even like computers or the internet started to use it because of fuck hookups you could get off facebook. (at least I remember it that way) I have no issue with people fucking and looking for better and safer ways to get their nasty on but something else happened..

A good majority of facebook users where not "internet" people but were drawn in by that and other social media popping up at the time. They were the ones who found things on the net and started raising hell about it.. they were late to the game and wasn't interested in what was being played, so to speak.

The internet, at least to me blew every other form of media away (early 2000s) because what people call "the mainstream" had not got there yet so censorship was low. I think of it in romantic terms and I am not trying to be fey about it.. it was the "outsider" hangout.. something cutting edge.

Maybe I was late to the game and that is just my rose color glasses talking.
