Has anyone read this book ? If so what are your opinions on the author's claims ?

Haven't read it, but I've seen enough books and goofy people like the author to know what's in it. Militant ideologies like Islamism are not new, all the violence we see from extremists comes from two sources in my opinion: People disenfranchised or torn apart by all the wars and conflicts in the Middle East and looking for someone, anyone, to focus their anger and pain on and they use their radicalised ideas to justify their anger. The other is the more esoteric movement today. People say Islam and Western Society aren't compatible when a lot of the oppressive things people in the west tie to Islam, it's actually tied to local Arabic, Pakistani, or whatever patriarchal culture where women are traditionally seen as objects. This is really no different than old Europe prior to the reformation and even then there was still misogyny. This other part of the violence, in my opinion, is because Islam is undergoing a movement where its followers are becoming more acceptant of Western ideas rather than the cultural norms of their ancestors and for some, this makes them freak out. But the Quran itself is no less advocating of violence than the Bible, it's all about the interpretation of the (wo)man holding it in their hands. I take the things I read in the Bible and the Quran metaphoric than literal but some will see the Bible or the Quran as a call to arms.

Again all of this is my personal opinion on the conflict of extremism as an outsider of Islam, so maybe my opinions are wrong, who knows. But either way, that book doesn't express any new kneejerking that hasn't been done since 2001.
