Before They Rock Portland

weird confluence of basketball lovers and skateboarders who are accustomed to wearing shorts all the time + cold weather. Sounds silly, I know, but hear me out: I used to rock this look in the 90s too.

Massively baggy shorts were a big 90s trend for both skateboarders and basketball players, which is fine when you are practicing your hobby, but they offer zero support or warmth, and the pacific NW is obviously known for long, grey winters.

An easy way to solve those problems is to wear some long underwear or spandex. Half the NBA wore tights under their baggy shorts. It wasn't much of a stretch for the streets to adapt the trend for colder weather.

Under Armour brand was created and cashed in on the trend: they have a diverse portfolio now (even including Steph Curry shoes) but the original lineup of UA products was exclusively underlayers for athletes like that.

Under Armour got their start by cashing in on that trend in the late 90s.
