Bi-weekly advice thread October 09, 2017

Hi all, The Situation: Selling ancestral land, as I do not have any option due to judicial disputes. I will personally gain about 1 cr from this sale. I do not want to invest in new property in recent future because: I might move abroad permanently. I do not see IT cities growing. Even if I stay in India, I do not want to limit my career options by staying in one city. Family wants me to buy a house so I can finally be "settled". But I do not want to, for the above-mentioned reasons. My Goal: Grow the funds as much as I can in India and later clear my home loan abroad in about 10 years, goal 3.5x at 15%.I presume even if I take loans in US/Canada, the cost of the loan will be lesser than my investment gains in India(that's why so much NRIs here?) Explicit Questions: Is 15% too high target over 10 years? What are ways to minimize taxes on this windfall, is cap gain applicable here? What are your views on not buying property? I plan to invest windfall in Equities(25%): will invest at intervals. MidCap/Small cap MFs (35%) Debt MF (15), I assume Interest rates will fall over 10 years. FD : (15), as an emergency fund. Gold ETF : (10) I would not mind if I lose about 20% overall, at any point in time. My investment track record : I have invested in equities only for past 1 year and booked about 18% gains. Which I think is below average, considering the megabull run and I was lucky in two IPOs.I hope to get better at stocks(risk?). A bit of my background. If this helps 29 and getting married soon, SO planning to work post marriage. 90k take home earning, career prospect is Above average. Savings and Investment: Enough for 2+ years survival Recently shifted from equities to short-term FDs, waiting for the market to fizz out, if that happens. Meanwhile cherrypicking stocks. Eroded significant sum of my earnings because of two stupidities a) Lifestyle. b) Father's health condition, we had no health insurance. Please comment or advice(books, your experience, reality check, fact etc)
