Barely relevant anecdote time.

Grew up in rural West Texas.

Coyotes are pretty common here and we used to have our dogs get beat up on them from time to time.

We went out and bought a 3 legged retired kill dog that used to be used for coyote greyhound hunts etc, if you're unsure what that is just youtube it but rest assured it's NSFW (dogs chasing down coyotes and tearing them to pieces).

Cut to a couple weeks after we get him we hear a fight break out again as we did every few weeks and we run out there to chase off the 3 or so coyotes that inevitably surround and injure our dogs and we see across the pasture where they've gone after our kill dog but the smart mother fucker cornered himself and made them all come at him from the front. By the time we got out there he had one on the ground bleeding out plenty and the other two were very much keeping their distance. The mean son of a bitch put a coyote on the ground in under a minute and probably would have done fine on his own had we not run out there.

TLDR: coyotes are mean and regularly tear domestic dogs to pieces in spite of being smaller, get some mean grizzled asshole to help out.
