Many animals the Lions hunt can kill them, there's a reason they don't hunt alone. Well several reasons.

Here is a couple of videos of lions killing hippos, and yes, they are oddly simmilar to the OP. chew the back while the hippo shows no reaction. If I had to bet, that hippo is dead.
edit: actually survived because the lions ran from some humans.
I visited Kenya, and while on safari saw a pride of lions eating a hippo. Apparently they formed a coalition -- this is when the alpha male decides not to cast out its male sons and they kinda all live as bros -- of four male lions and took down a hippo and were all eating it.
So other than it being the worst smell ever to grace my nostrils, that was pretty cool.They've taken down elephants in large enough prides.
Usually in the dark because elephants don't see well in the dark and only the "smaller" elephants ( juveniles/females ) or injured elephants. Lions wouldn't go after a large healthy bull elephant.
I think that hippo is in genuine peril.
Definitely. Unless that hippo finds water, it is dead. As with elephants, the lions tend to target female, young and injured hippos. Can't imagine lions attacking a healthy bull hippo.
