Why bother making film and television criticism, when we could all just not watch films or TV shows that we don't like? Why bother producing music reviews and ratings, when we could all just make our own way by avoiding what we don't like to listen to? Why bother with any kind of critical analysis of any kind of art or creative product, ever, at any time, when we could all just avoid something if we decide we don't like it? Because comparing things we like with things we don't like, and figuring out why some things work well, and why other things don't work so well, is the easiest way to learn how to make more things that we do like and that work well. It's also the basis of pretty much all human culture and invention worth bothering with in the first place. Some ideas are better than others. Some pieces of art and creativity are more effective and interesting than others. Figuring out which is which not only helps us make sense of the world and derive meaning from it, it also helps us develop criteria that we can apply to new things that we create so that we will find them more enjoyable. In this case, the person who runs this webcomic blog is himself a webcomic artist, so reviewing other comics and comparing them is part of his creative process. But personally, I'm just glad he bothers in the first place, because there isn't a whole lot of good webcomic criticism out there at all, and I think there can and should be. The graphic arts should be taken seriously, just like any other art form, and part of taking art and storytelling seriously means examining it with a critical eye. Maybe if more people put more thought into why some webcomics are better than others, and we created a culture where it's okay to criticize other people's creative decisions when we don't think they work, instead of being relentlessly positive about everything and shaming those who disagree, we would get more good webcomics.
