I work on my own projects. I know I'm speaking from a place of privilege because I know I'll work in tech eventually and 10k won't mean much. Many people don't have that opportunity. But at the same time, people who didn't grow up hearing about the next IPO at the dinner table or simply studied a completely different field normally wouldn't know any better unless someone told them. And there have to be standards in place to make sure that person is providing honest information. You wouldn't work with a hand holder and neither do I. But I don't want to work with liars either, because they also don't want to put the work in. That's why they deceive. I guess the idea of "if someone else got deceived then it could happen to me or someone I care about" doesn't really hold society together.
