[Discussion] Why is the environment of this subreddit so negative with very little participation, upvoting, and discussion?

Guitar is a broad general topic, so what you get is a large, transient population, redundancy, and a lack of focus. Although this sub has a list of "sibling communities" in the sidebar, they studiously avoid mentioning any of the topical guitar subreddits that exist, like /r/jazzguitar, /r/classicalguitar, /r/metalguitar, /r/guitarlessons etc that would help flow people toward those topics.

Generally, this place is hostile to vids/audio of anyone who isn't famous playing, but there is the One Take Sunday thread to participate in.

Most of the down voting is actually the work of some weirdos who hate yet obsess about the place, so are willing to spend time doing that to assuage their squirming brains. lol

The flair sorting makes it more enjoyable though, as you can look at just "discussion" or "oc" and skip the "gear" or "question" posts if you want.

One thing I find irksome is the "OC" flair, in that the rules say you cannot link to your own Youtube channel etc, so it really limits what form "OC" can take. Some people seem to manage to post links to their lessons, etc anyhow, so it appears as if the rule is enforced arbitrarily, though really they just can't catch 'em all. I also don't get how that works with the One Take Sunday thread. shrug

The mods have done a lot of work recently to try and improve things, but ultimately they can't control what people want to look at or talk about, and they can't really control the douche factor beyond banning egregious behavior, and then people just make another account.

There is however a lot of positive interesting discussion here -- it's just a matter of finding it among the rest of the stuff.
