Wine will naturally ferment from yeast on the skin of the grapes. You don’t need to add anything to grape juice to make wine. If you juice grapes and put them in a jar the airlock will start bubbling almost immediately. That’s co2 being released from fermentation. That’s one of the reasons wine in the ancient world was always associated with deities. It went through this mysterious (back then) process that made an intoxicating drink.

The process for removing the yeast from grape skins wasn’t invented until 1800 years after Christ by Thomas Bramwell Welch, the founder of Welches grape juice.
