ELI5: Why is Britain considered the closest ally of the USA when the USA had to fight a war of independence to break free from Britain? Why is France not their closest ally since they fought alongside USA in the independence war and without them USA had very low chances of winning?

Past rivalries matched by civil discourse can foster positive relationships.

It's not a coincidence the Five Eyes that the US considers worthy sharing Top secret information with (upon an individual basis, obviously) share a common language and cultural and even historical legacy.

While not the same line of thoughts at all, there is still an indication of this in countries like Japan, which could not be more foreign to Europe yet the US/Japan rivalry and the civility that the 2 cultures are capable of hosting when not in a state of war led to a mutual respect that meant 1 side could not "control" the other. So while Japan is not in the Fiveeye circle of trust, I honestly feel like if Japan was a nation much more powerful and culturally American (systematically) or more English speaking, they would be onboard to be one of the next parties for inclusion.

The key to trust is not just the shared historical legacy but the belief that cooperation is mutual, values are common and that alliances cannot be corrupted by foreign agents.
