ELI5: Paris attacks mega-thread

the immigrants aren't demanding that France change its culture though. in fact, you couldn't change France's culture heritage through a method like that. French people will continue to embody their culture regardless of who else lives with them. The argument that immigration ruins a country's cultural heritage is baseless, boring, and just a lazy attempt at justifying your own inability to accept others.

you expect that immigrants should conform to a countries' culture and customs. unfortunately, we're entering a pretty global and interconnected age if you hadn't noticed, and I have a feeling that countries who refuse to accept some diversity (particularly when that diversity is trying to escape war and conflict) are going to be looked at as, well, babies, for the lack of a better term. you can either build a wall and refuse immigrants to enter (and become obnoxious brat with arms crossed incarnate), or you can say to yourself "hmm, maybe their culture isn't so different from ours. maybe at the end of the day they really are people just like us. maybe them practicing their own religion and dressing in their own clothing isn't so bad. maybe accepting those types of things wouldn't really ruin my life after all. maybe it would actually barely affect me at all, when I really think about it. maybe the cultural heritage I love so much actually wouldn't deteriorate just because of the presence of some immigrants. maybe such patriotism actually does more harm than good. maybe the most important thing is just to love other people, so that they'll be more inclined to love you back. maybe there would be a lot less conflict all over the world if there were a little more acceptance of things that, in the end, really are pretty trivial differences."
