Entering Student

It's actually illegal for Drexel University to force someone to comply with that policy. The 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands are "Unlicensed Spectrum" [1]. Unlicensed use is bounded by some restrictions described in the Code of Federal Regulations under Title 47 Part 15.5, most specifically part B, which states "Operation of an intentional, unintentional, or incidental radiator is subject to the conditions that no harmful interference is caused and that interference must be accepted that may be caused by the operation of an authorized radio station, by another intentional or unintentional radiator, by industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) equipment, or by an incidental radiator." Harmful interference here is understood to mean interfering with licensed users. Currently, the FCC takes the stand that "The primary operating condition for unlicensed devices is that the operator must accept whatever interference is received..." (as seen in [2]) which means that it does not protect Drexel Universities wifi, as it operates in unlicensed spectrum. More information is available at [3]. Additionally, these federal regulations supersede anything students might have agreed to as they're not legally binding (as it would constitute an illegal agreement).

Of course, if the student were to plug in an AP to extend the network, that would be a different story. Attempting to blanket-ban all wireless APs is overreaching, however - especially when the reason is apparently to avoid interference, when clearly Drexel is not entitled to any special considerations.

I only bring this up because I've been told before that I have to turn off my wireless router, which my friends and I use for playing games over LAN, and it really aggravates me. Please let me know if I'm mistaken in any of my points, as I'd be interested in being set straight.
