From the interviews I’ve watched, I feel the Pakistani Television Industry uses “depression” as a synonym for upset/sad

No.

I think the vast majority of humans have symptoms at some point in their life that would qualify for a diagnosis of depression.

Just like everyone has physical illnesses, most of us have mental illnesses too. They’re not always permanent and life-consuming, and many of us get better on our own, but some of us can get worse if not treated.

It’s just like how most colds will go away on their own without any treatment, but some colds lead to pneumonia in some cases- usually when the person has risk factors like old age or immune disorders. Just like that, a depressive episode can turn into persistent depression in some cases especially those who have the risk factors for it- like those who don’t have family support, or hobbies or healthy friendships.

I’m a doctor and have studied mental health. Anxiety and depression are extremely common and most people would benefit from treatment- whether in the form of talk therapy, or behavioural therapy or medication.

We don’t diagnose these issues enough.

If you’ve have 10 colds in your life, why is it so hard to believe you might have qualified for a diagnosis of depression at some point in your life?

I myself am on treatment for an anxiety disorder and feel so much better. I know so many people who have taken mental health meds and recovered completely from their illness and never needed treatment again. I also know many who suffered several relapses.

I think the more we talk about depression the better.
