Germany may need €21bn to house and educate refugees - report

The German government's attitude of "if you make it here we'll help you" is total bullshit.

That actually made me think about it again. But no, i still think personally that the way Germany was handling things in the past should not interfere with the present aid. Im sure there is a learning curve here too.

Germany needs to change its approach to refugee care. But in the meantime, isnt it fair to say that because Germany fucked up, we owe it even more to the refugees? If we refuse aid now, because the German government fucked things up in the past, the refugees are the ones paying the price.

I compare it to the methadon clinic, if you can indulge me for a second:

There was a methadon clinic, on a boat, close to where i live. It provided free methadon for heroin addicts and the like. Also a place where they could shoot up and perhaps stay the night. A journalist reported on the fact the drugboat costs the taxpayer two million euros a year. People were outraged! Two million dollars a year, on drug addicts?! We could use that money way better. And so the drugboat was closed.

Now come the result. The two million obviously never makes it back into the actual community, but gets lost in the big picture. But the addicts still needed their fix. Turns out that stealing, destruction and people sleeping on the street was costing the community more than two million.

And so the drugboat was reinstated.

Perhaps by helping the refugees, we can help ourselves too? I think that is the way we should look at it. If we want to be really inhumane we could call it damage control. Throw money at them now, because you can be certain it will cost you a lot more in the future otherwise.
