The EP would perhaps be a better example. Originally it referred to the actual vinyl carrier, but its physical limitations resulted in a characteristic way of bundling music that is still called EP in the digital era. It doesn't become an album or a discography just because a single audio file can technically contain weeks of music. Even when you add video clips and upload it to YouTube, as long as the music is laid out the same, it's still an EP imo.

The original GIF format is designed and optimized for clip/line art, and its compression does a terrible job at anything else. When they were adopted for short video clips over a decade ago, they were disabused from their original purpose far more than when the underlying format changed to MP4 or WebM, imo.
