I think having a racist outlook is the issue, there's just different opportunities for it to manifest depending on where you are. I've no doubt our rates for racially aggravated assault etc will be lower than somewhere with a higher non-white population though.

I don't think it's so much people getting on their high horse as it is that being hospitable and egalitarian is something that's deeply ingrained in Scottish national identity. So we don't like to think that we're racist or if something racist happens here we want to explain it away because it's hard to reconcile that with who we think we are. But we can't just pretend it doesn't exist or that it's not an issue at all because there's less actual crimes.

We're a great country but we do also have some twats and some problems and we should probably get a bit more comfortable addressing that without taking it as an insult.
