Halsey on vinyl

Try to forgive Dilldeer’s comment’s tone.

It’s true that some of the suitcase type turntables track pretty heavy at around 7g. The conical stylus they employ doesn’t ride deep in the groove also, which means the area they do touch “sees” a lot of force snd by extension, can wear records at an accelerated rate.

That’s not meant to scare you, but if your intent is to collect vinyl records, some thought should be given to preserving them. If you just play records for fun, no worries.

More advanced stylus shapes and better tonearms can track with less force, make better contact with the groove (especially the inner groove area) and pull more detail.

It’s worth saving up for a better table/cartridge but what’s important is that you are enjoying your music.

If you have the opportunity to upgrade, consider a table like the Audio Technica LP120x or a Rega P1 if you have a receiver with a built in phono amp.

The AT table has a built in phono preamp and comes with an elliptical stylus which is affordable to replace at around $50. No need to re-align the cartridge if you brake or wear out the stylus. Just swap out the tip. Easy peasy.

For comparison, the moving coil on my table has to be removed and shipped off for re-tipping or repair if damaged, and that service will cost a significant amount and takes a couple months.

The replicant stylus on the Ortofon will last far longer (when properly aligned and kept clean) than a lot of affordable styli. This helps to reduce cost but it’s still a major investment.

Think of it like owning a high-end sports car like a Porsche or Ferrari. The performance limit is high, but the cost of maintenance, tires snd brakes is prohibitive and you need the right environment to extract the performance potential.

Hifi is like that. It’s not just the cost of the table/cartridge. It’s everything connected to it. It’s the table, cartridge, tonearm, phono amp, speakers, amplifier, room acoustics, the stand where the table sits (vibration isolation).
