Most people will believe a historical rumor and and remain completely unaware of the underlying controversy. The idea that we are being lied to in part about what happened in the Holocaust or on 9/11 is just too far-fetched for most people to accept as even plausible, so they will not investigate it any more than most will investigate flat earth. Hard to blame them considering how well the idea has been stigmatized.
