[House] What should I do to improve the mix and make the track less rough around the edges?

https://clyp.it/lskh4ppq compare this track's isolated kick to yours. The kick is way louder in the mixing stage than all other elements. Not the case in your track. If you want your kick to pop easiest way to do it is to make it like 3-6 db louder than the rest of your channels. That will inevitably result in a compressed kick, because during mastering everything will be squashed at -0 db anyway but it works for house arguably. Ideally you want your kick to pop through good mixing, sidechaining, vol automations etc but theres so many ways to do it in house and the one you linked is a viable one aswell. Although I'd say this track's prod is not very professional at least by current standards so I'd look into some 2016+ house for reference.
