I just binge watched this whole series...

Obviously this is all opinion, but I would like to probe your thoughts on the very first episode.

"The PM only cared about his public image, not the actual life of the princess. All his staff were the same way, constantly checking those ratings and letting the public influence them. The reporters were horribly immoral, they had no news but made the story out greater than it was. The public were immoral because they wanted to see it, they wanted to vote in the polls and be taken by the moment."

And? There are shockingly selfish people everywhere in the world. Frankly, I've yet to see a politician I don't think is entirely self absorbed in their own image to the detriment of the people that voted for them. His staff were literally doing their job, to consider the public opinion and how that would affect his political future, and that's exactly what the real world equivalents do today. Any politician that takes action for a greater good, against popular opinion, won't be seen as having done the right thing, the voters would view it as a slight against them and vote for someone else. Whether they would do this with the life of another person in their hands wouldn't make much of a difference IMO.

Journalists, in my experience, are incredibly immoral in the way they pursue a story, but again this is their job, they don't care about the impact on the wider public of their work, they want recognition and accolades. (Side story: I used to work at a restaurant where one of my colleagues and friends was brutally murdered, it made national headline news. The day word got out, a reporter literally came straight up to me and wanted sound bites for his report, no consideration of the fact I'd lost a friend and co-worker, no apologetic tone, just demanding. I understand this isn't representative of all journos, but having done some work in the industry, it's an accurate picture of many.)

And yes, the public had a morbid curiosity to view the spectacle. Again, my experience is that a LOT of people wouldn't give a flying fuck about the morality and would want to see the show.

I love Black Mirror because it does what it's title implies, it shows us a darker side to ourselves through technology, that we might not like to see. Just because it feels uncomfortable to watch, doesn't mean that those same veins of immorality and selfishness are not lurking beneath the surface in everyone.

If I've missed something, would love to know, but I thought S1E1 was a scathingly accurate parody of the '24 hour news culture' that dominates the media landscape right now, where everyone wants to be first with the goriest footage they can find. There's a very good reason a well worn phrase in journalism is "if it bleeds, it leads".
