Just started doing some shopping to upgrade my camera and buy a better kit lens and I kept getting search results along the lines of "micro four thirds is dead." What happened the past year or two?

I've been using an Olympus E-20N for a very long time now. It's time for me to upgrade so I'm about to pull the trigger on (all secondhand or refurbished) an Olympus E-30, as well as two Olympus Zuiko lenses (40-150mm and 14-42mm). I plan on using it for not only general photography of my pets, days out or family gatherings but also aircraft photography... pretty much the same things I've been using my E-20 for.

I've shot with an E-30 and Olympus Zuiko lenses before and quite like them, though I do not own one myself. I've looked at comparatively priced other cameras but found nothing I liked as much. I nearly bought an OM-D E-M5 with a 14-42mm off EBay instead but just couldn't get over the style of it (no articulating screen, no top display, as well as just the shape of it) and the fact that it has no built-in flash... I mean, I could have maybe gotten used to it but no flash is just a real deal breaker. I understand maybe the OM line didn't have one, but they should have put one on anyway... that's just silly.

I'm on a very strict budget, and I've decided to go with a micro 4/3 system because it seems to be pretty well supported and provides great image quality. I feel like in a few years if I have some spare cash and want a better lens, or body, I can buy it and not have to abandon the rest of my gear.
