Lama Gendune Rinpoche - The Essence of Mind - 29.07.1990

Having a good memory doesn't need to have anything to do with clinging.

But it does. Of course, spontaneous recognition of something seen or heard before, does not, for recognition is a spontaneous, natural "function". But that isn't what we are talking about here. We are talking about memorization and recollection, which is quite a different mechanism. It requires intention (aka volition), both at the moment of "storage" and at the moment of "retrieval". This applies to the example of the translator, but also to any act of intentional retention, e.g. a shopping list, or the ABC, or four noble truths.

A mind free of volition remembers nothing (though it will still recognize).
