Learn ALL the rules for your deck; even head judges make mistakes :)

They also need to set some guide rules for Companions in paper play. My opponent revealed theirs too late in a game (they pulled it out of their deck box after we determined play/draw, presented, and shuffled each other's decks, and while I was drawing my opening hand but just before they drew theirs) at which point I called a judge and found out they decided they weren't following the exact timing rules for revealing Companions during Vegas in particular.

Ok, no info gained or lost, not the letter of the law but whatever.

Game 2 my opponent leaves their Companion exactly where it was game 1 with no indication like pointing or verbalizing it was their Companion for this game, so I assumed it was not - it's not my responsibility to remind them to reveal it as their Companion every game.

The game goes long and they end up taking the special action to put it in their hand, but in my mind it was never declared as a Companion for game 2 so I was playing with cards in mind that they could not have had if it were a legal Companion.

We have a second judge call, and they eventually rule that because they never verbally stated it was their Companion in game 1, despite the judge call about it in the first place and the act of removing it from the deck box and placing it near the play area, I had agreed to a shortcut whereby my opponent did not have to say or do anything to indicate it was their Companion.

Now I don't think my opponent was doing anything sketchy, they seemed like a pretty nice and polite person, but I can see how there is potential for abuse - they could have brought in cards that didn't fit the requirement and just didn't draw them, so they could say it was their Companion. Or they could have drawn them in the game and then not put it in their hand.

It's a difficult tension because it's not on me to inform them they didn't indicate they had a Companion, and clarifying questions could prompt them to make a better play. But leaving it vague could potentially grant them an advantage.

I wish they would have put some kind of information out on what the expectations were for Companions for the event ahead of time to help avoid all of this, and I hope it gets clarified in the future.
